Homemade Buttercream Frosting {Perfect for Cake and Cupcakes}

This Homemade Buttercream Frosting is easy to make and sure to become your favorite go to frosting recipe! This frosting is perfect for cakes or cupcakes!

Ingredients for Homemade Buttercream Frosting

This recipe is super fast to make. If you forget to pull out the butter ahead of time to soften just microwave for 10 seconds to soften it a little bit. For this recipe you will need:

  • butter, softened
  • powdered sugar
  • vanilla extract
  • salt
  • milk
  • gel food coloring, if desired

Once you make the buttercream, go ahead and use it however you desire. Pipe it on cupcakes, frost a cake, use it to make cake pops, etc. If you have leftover buttercream it can be stored in the refrigerator in an air tight container for up to 1 week.

Yield: 4 cups
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Light and fluffy buttercream frosting!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 lb (about 4 cups) powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp milk, more to make it creamier

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients except powdered sugar in a bowl. Using either a hand mixer or stand mixer, begin to mix ingredients on low speed and slowly add in powdered sugar.
  2. Once all powdered sugar is added turn up speed to medium and whip until light and smooth. Add more milk if desired to make it creamier. Scrape bowl as necessary.
  3. Frost your cupcakes or cake and enjoy!

Notes

To color frosting add in food coloring while whipping.

Try a different extract for a different flavor, such as lemon, peppermint or almond!
