Ingredients for Chocolate Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats
This recipe mostly requires mostly pantry staples as well as a couple other simple ingredients. In addition to these ingredients you will also need a 9 x 13 baking dish, wax paper or parchment paper, microwavable mixing bowls, measuring cups, spatulas, and non-stick spray. You will need:
- Marshmallows (regular or mini marshmallows)
- Butter (non-dairy if needed)
- Rice Krispie cereal
- Peanut butter (creamy or natural peanut butter is best)
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips (non-dairy if needed)
Rice Krispie Treats Tips for Best Results
- Use fresh marshmallows! Marshmallows can go stale and will affect the texture of your treats. Fresh marshmallows will give your rice krispie treats a softer texture.
- Use fresh rice krispie cereal… another easy step that will great affect the final product.
- Don’t skip the butter. I know it may seem like a small amount but this helps keep the rice krispie treats soft. Without butter they can be very hard.
- Spray the pan and your spatula with non-stick cooking spray to help remove them from the pan and to make it easier to spread them out.
How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats
Making the Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats
This recipe can be made either on the stove or in the microwave! I find the microwave to be much faster and it makes for easier clean up.
To start, put the marshmallows, butter and 1/2 cup of peanut butter in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute and 20 seconds. Remove from the microwave and stir well. If marshmallows are not completely melted return to the microwave for another 15-30 seconds. Stir well to make sure everything is combined.
Add in the rice krispies cereal and stir well. Be sure to coat all of the cereal in the marshmallow mixture. Once combined, set aside. Spray a 9 x 13 inch pan with non-stick spray.
Add the cereal mixture to the prepared pan and press mixture down evenly into the pan. This can be done with a spatula or by using wax or parchment paper that has been spray with non-stick spray.
Once the cereal is pressed into an even layer set it aside to cool for about 30 minutes.
To Use the Stove Top
To use the stove instead of the microwave, combine the peanut butter, butter and marshmallows in a large pot. Heat over medium-low heat until it is all melted and combined together. Then, remove the pot from the heat and continue with the recipe.

Adding the Chocolate Layer on Top
Once the rice krispie treats are cool, combine the remaining peanut butter and chocolate chips in a microwavable bowl. Microwave in 30 second increments being sure to stir well in between each increment until it is smooth and all chocolate chips are melted.
Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cooled rice krispie treats and spread evenly over the top. Refrigerate rice krispie treats just until the chocolate has set. This will take about 30 minutes.
Once the chocolate has set, remove the treats from the refrigerator. Cover with plastic wrap and store at room temperature until ready to serve.
Once ready to serve use a sharp knife and slice into squares. This can be done easily by removing the entire treat from the pan and placing it on a cutting board. Clean the knife in between cuts to make sure you get clean slices.
The peanut butter in the chocolate layer will keep it a little soft making it easier to cut.
Frequently Asked Questions
Butter is extremely necessary when making these treats. Without the butter when the marshmallow and cereal mixture cools it will be hard. The butter helps to keep them soft. Regular butter or non-dairy butter can both be used.
No, once the chocolate layer is set on the top of the treats these no longer need to be refrigerated. These are safe to store at room temperature for up to 5 days (if they last that long). Keeping rice krispie treats refrigerated can cause them to harden up which would make them more difficult to eat.
Absolutely! Use chocolate rice krispies cereal or cocoa krispies in place of the regular rice krispies for extra chocolate flavor. Or, don’t feel like making the chocolate layer for the top? Simply stir the chocolate chips into the cereal mixture once the rice krispies are coated marshmallows.
Rice krispie treats should be stored in an airtight container or in the 9 x 13 inch dish covered in plastic wrap. Keep them in a cool dry place away from heat to keep the chocolate from melting. Eat within 5 days.
