Ingredients for Crock Pot Blueberry Applesauce

This easy recipe only calls for four simple ingredients (plus water). You will also need an immersion blender, food processor or blender as well. You will need:

  • fresh apples- see the FAQ about what variety of apples to use
  • frozen blueberries- you can also use fresh blueberries
  • cinnamon
  • lemon juice

How to Make Crock Pot Blueberry Applesauce

To make the applesauce, simply peel and chop the apples. This is the hardest part of this whole recipe. Then, combine them in the crock pot with the blueberries, lemon juice and cinnamon. My kids love to help with recipes like this one where they get to use these awesome kid safe knives we love!

Once you have all of your ingredients combined, place lid on top of crock pot. Cook on low heat for 3-4 hours or until the apples are tender. I do not recommend cooking this on high heat.

Next, use an immersion blender to blend the applesauce until smooth.

Finally, let cool and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. I prefer to store any homemade applesauce in mason jars which make for easy pouring. Also, this recipe can easily be doubled or tripled depending on the size of the crock pot used.

Recipe notes:

  • The blueberries contain pectin which will naturally thicken the applesauce, however if you prefer a thinner applesauce, just add a little water until your desired consistency is achieved.
  • The lemon juice helps to keep the apples from turning too brown while they are cooking but it also aids in extending the shelf life.
  • Do not store applesauce in the pantry because there are no preservatives.
  • This recipe freezes well.

What variety of apples should I use to make applesauce?

We prefer to use sweet apples such as honey crisp, gala apples, pink lady and fuji apples. However you can really use any variety of apple. If you prefer to use golden delicious, red delicious or granny smith apples I recommend throwing in a couple of the sweeter apples since this recipe does not call for any added sugar.

Can I sweeten this applesauce?

Absolutely. While my kids will devour this applesauce with no added sugar you can absolutely sweeten it. Try adding maple syrup, honey, brown sugar or a touch of sugar. This is best done when the applesauce is still hot so that the sugar will be completely incorporated.

Can I change the thickness and texture of this applesauce?

Yes, for a smooth applesauce use an immersion blender, food processor or blender and blend until very smooth. For a chunky applesauce, use a potato masher and mash just until you like the texture. To make the applesauce thinner, add a quarter cup of water at a time.

How should I store this applesauce?

We store our homemade applesauce in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator. Depending on the type of applesauce it may last a couple of weeks. Be sure to check for signs of spoilage before serving such as mold or off odors.

Homemade Crock Pot Blueberry Applesauce is perfectly sweet with no added sugar!

Ingredients

  • 3 lb Gala apples (about 10 small or 6 large)
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • Juice from 1 lemon

Instructions

  1. Peel, core and chop all apples.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a crockpot.
  3. Cook on low for 3-4 hours or until apples are tender.
  4. Blend until smooth with immersion blender.
  5. Cool and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Also can be frozen.

Notes

Blueberries can be substituted for any frozen berry if preferred.
