How to make Homemade Slice and Bake Sugar Cookies

This dough will need to be chilled before it can be used. First, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy using a hand mixer or stand mixer. Next, add eggs and vanilla and mix until combined. Add flour, baking powder and salt and mix well. Take dough out of bowl and shape into a log. Wrap log in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Remove dough from refrigerator and unwrap. Using a sharp knife, slice dough into 1/4-1/3 inch slices. There should be approximately 36 cookies. Place cookies on baking sheet. Leave a little space between but they will not spread much. If desired top with sprinkles.

Bake at 350 degrees for 8-12 minutes depending on the thickness of the cookies. Move cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely. If desired, cookies can be frosted when cool. Once completely cool, store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Other ways to use this dough

This dough can also be used to make a cookie pizza by rolling it into a large circle. Also, you can roll the dough and cut it into shapes. Either way be sure to keep the dough cold so that the shapes stay when they are baked!
